His masterclass is titled “Do We Have a Right to Migrate? The Catholic Case for Allowing and Regulating Migration."
In today's climate of heightened anxieties surrounding migration, opposition to the movement of people is unfortunately present even within Christian communities. However, theology and history reveal a strong tradition of Christian support for the right to migrate. Notably, 16th-century Spanish theologians, such as Francisco de Vitoria and Domingo de Soto of the School of Salamanca, championed the right of individuals to cross political borders and establish new lives in other countries. While recognizing the need for legitimate regulations, these influential theologians articulated a compelling ethical framework grounded on the Gospel and the western legal tradition that firmly established the right to migrate as a cornerstone of Christian social teaching. This historical precedent demonstrates a long-standing tradition within Christian teaching that upholds the inherent dignity and mobility of all human beings and that can inspire our current approach to the migration crisis.
