Itzxul Moreno, an education and outreach specialist in the Transformational Leaders Program, will lead the spring Beloved Community Gathering, focused on the importance of names.
The gathering, open to all faculty and staff, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 22, in the Downes Club at Corbett Family Hall. A buffet lunch will be provided. Registration is due Friday, May 9.
Moreno will share insights into how names carry deep personal legacy and cultural significance and will offer guidance on how to navigate the pronunciation of uncommon names with care and respect.
“During this session, we will examine how the way we pronounce names affects our capacity to genuinely see, understand, and connect with each other,” Moreno said. “By engaging in interactive discussions and utilizing practical tools, we aim to cultivate a campus culture where every person feels respected, valued, and seen as part of our Beloved Community. Exploring how we pronounce one another will foster connections that enhance our collaborative efforts, promote empathy, and further our understanding throughout campus life.”
Hosted by the Office of Institutional Transformation in partnership with NDHR, Beloved Community Gatherings are designed to break down barriers, build bridges, and celebrate the richness of the Notre Dame community. Each event centers on shared stories, meaningful conversation, and connection.
The inaugural Beloved Community Gathering was held earlier this year as part of Walk the Walk Week. The event featured a welcome from Executive Vice President Shannon Cullinan and a keynote by Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, a spiritual writer, preacher, and community cultivator.
